Dan was born to Audrey and Ed Conner in Lanford, Illinois. Dan met future wife Roseanne at Lanford High and they began a relationship during Halloween. At a costume party, Dan came with a date and Roseanne let her do the bob-for-a-apple and when she came back up she had blue paint on her face. Dan thought that this was funny and asked Roseanne to dance, it was love at first sight. He and Roseanne broke up one time because she was trying to make him jealous and it broke his heart. He took one of his friends: Phyllis Zimmer (who Roseanne hated) and took her to Watch Out Hill (Lanford's 'make-out' spot) and slept with her. Roseanne found out about it fifteen years later. Roseanne and Dan got back together and got married right after they got out of high school. After their marriage they welcomed three children: Becky, Darlene, and D.J.. About eight years after the series began, Rosanne became pregnant with a fourth child (second boy) named Jerry.
In the beginning of the series, Dan was an easy-going, drywall contractor. During the final episode, when Roseanne reveals that the entire series was written as a book based on her life and family, she changed certain elements of what she hadn't liked; most notably, Dan had actually passed away after having his heart attack. Dan is mostly known for his relationship with his daughter Darlene and son D.J..
